WEEKEND DRESSMAKING COURSE - ADULTS

£200.00

Dress to Impress: Adult Dressmaking Weekender

Dates: Saturday 9th May and Sunday 10th May, 10am - 4pm

Make something truly wearable at this introductory dressmaking weekend course!

During this dressmaking focused weekend, you’ll learn how to ‘read’ a pattern, take accurate measurements, cut fabric on grain, and sew your own simple top - with options to suit every style. Walk away with skills, confidence, and a gorgeous handmade garment.

PLEASE NOTE: This course is suitable for those who can already sew, and are looking to take their first step into sewing clothing. You will need to know how to thread a machine, sew a straight stitch to an accurate seam allowance, ‘finish’ seams to prevent fraying, and backstitch. If you have taken a beginners sewing course at Studio Stitch Up you are definitely ready for this class! If you don’t yet know how to sew, please enrol in a beginners class first or book a 1:1 lesson here.

What You’ll Learn

  • How to read & follow a clothing pattern

  • How to take accurate measurements and choose sizing

  • Pattern layout, grainline & cutting

  • Beginner dressmaking construction: including seams, matching notches, necklines, facings, hemming, elastic insertion, seam finishes, pressing & fitting

Project

  • Participants will make the Rectangle Top by Sewing Therapy (XS to 3XL) - which includes a wide variety of options to suit every style. Choose sleeves or sleeveless, a cropped or standard length, elasticated or loose waist, straight slit or square neckline, and many other options

  • Pattern included - yours to take away after the class to make more if you’d like

  • You can choose your own fabric - see notes below - or ask us to provide it for you by selecting the add on before checkout.

Course Details

Duration: 2 days
Time: 10am - 4pm (with 1hr lunch break)
Skill Level: Basic sewing skills needed (see notes above)
Group Size: 6 max
Location: Studio Stitch Up, Chesham old town

Machine use, needles, and tools all included - plus tea, coffee, and unlimited biscuits!

After this course, you will be equipped to join our standalone intermediate dressmaking classes as you’ll have mastered the skills necessary - coming soon!

SUITABLE FABRICS - You will need 2m of one of the following fabrics: cotton lawn, cotton poplin, linen or linen blends, cotton chambray, cotton seersucker, cotton gingham, double gauze. Please ensure the fabric is washed and dried before the course to prevent shrinking of your finished top! You will also need 2 x Gutermann Sew All Polyester thread in a matching colour. Full instructions will of course be sent to attendees.

PLEASE NOTE: If you are confident using your own machine and would prefer to bring it along, you may do so- just let us know. Otherwise, we will be using the studio’s Pfaff Ambition machines.

If you can sew but are not yet confident on your new machine, you can add on a 30min session after the day one class if you would like to be shown how to thread and operate your own machine - just add this below and bring your machine with you. You will then be able to use your own machine for day two.
